Kyanite Round Cabochon

This kyanite round cabochon features a sapphire-blue color with some inclusions. The gemstone's blue color occurs naturally without dyes or other treatments; it is a great choice for custom jewelry designs—create a simple pendant or post earrings or pair it with complementary-color gemstones to create a more complex bracelet or necklace design. The kyanite mineral, composed of aluminum silicate is usually found in metamorphic rock—modified by extreme pressure, chemical processes and heat, creating layers or bands; kyanite occurs in long, thin bladed crystals. Gemstone quality kyanite is typically blue, ranging from a pale color (similar to blue topaz) to a deep sapphire-blue color. Besides blue, kyanite can be clear, green, black and rarely, purple. Depending on the specific properties of each gem kyanite can sometimes exhibit pleochroic characteristics—presenting a different color when viewed from different angles. Kyanite is anisotropic, having different hardness properties vertically versus horizontally within the crystal.
